Cape Malay cookery classes in Bo-Kaap. The only traditional South African food is Cape Malay food. Gamiedah of Lekka Kombuis offers a short walking tour of her neighbourhood followed by cooking lessons in her kitchen. Afterwards you get to eat what you’ve made. This is a wonderful way of tasting local food and interacting with local culture.
Street Art Tours – spend a few hours with a local exploring the streets of Salt River or Woodstock and learning about the street art of these very old suburbs.

Game viewing There are no real safaris in or near Cape Town, but if you have limited time there are a few nearby private reserves that offer game viewing of iconic African animals such as various antelope species, zebra, giraffes, lions and rhino.
Activities for children
The Two Oceans Aquarium in the V&A Waterfront is both entertaining and educational with marine life ranging from ‘Nemos’ to sharks and everything between. The ‘touch pool’ allows the opportunity to touch and feel some sea creatures.
The Scratch Patch is a gemstone shop with an area carpeted in tiny semi-precious stones. Children can select a little bag, dig in and fill it with colourful polished stones of their choice to take home.
Ostrich Farm South Africa is the world’s ostrich capital with Oudsthoorn at its centre, but you can see and learn all about these gigantic birds on a farm just outside of Cape Town.
Duck Parade at Vergenoegd Wine Estate in Stellenbosch – hundreds of Indian Runner ‘working’ ducks are released into the vineyards to remove snails and other pests. The twice-daily parade is popular with kids of all ages.
